Meet The All-new 2024 Porsche Macan Electric SUV - autojosh

Electric car drivers can now charge their vehicles while on the move, thanks to a new stretch of highway in France that enables driving and charging simultaneously.

A new stretch of highway has been opened in France where electric cars and trucks can charge while driving. This 1.5-kilometer section is located on the A10 motorway towards Paris, near Angervilliers. Beneath the asphalt, 900 copper coils connected to the electricity grid create an electromagnetic field that charges electric vehicles as they pass over it. However, the vehicle must be compatible with this technology. For example, the electric Porsche Macan, set to debut soon, is expected to be able to utilize this system.

A stretch of highway has been developed as part of the “Charge as You Drive” project, a collaboration among Vinci Autoroutes, Electreon, Gustave Eiffel University, and Hutchinson. The new testing phase features a passenger car, a van, a bus, and a truck.

Initial analyses suggest the system can deliver a peak power of over 300 kW and an average power of 200 kW or more. A heavy-duty truck can recharge for one kilometer while travelling one kilometer, while a passenger car can recharge for up to three kilometers per kilometer driven. This means you could arrive home with a fuller battery than when you left, given the stretch of charging road is long enough.

The brains behind the project hope to reduce the battery size required for electric vehicles in the future. It’s unknown when the technology will be widely implemented or what the associated costs will be.
