Jaguar States Why It had To “Hit The Reset Button”
Jaguar admits its radical pivot won’t please everyone but insists a total overhaul was necessary. After years of struggling against German rivals, the brand is abandoning its current lineup to move upmarket with exclusive, high-priced electric vehicles.
MD Rawdon Glover told Evo that the brand’s old model lacked profitability and growth, making it impossible to compete against German rivals in the premium-volume segment.
‘We had created some brilliant products, some were best in class, but the competitiveness in that sector was too much for Jaguar to cut through. When we had to make a decision as to what was next for Jaguar – what cars we would make, which sectors to compete in – we could have carried on as we were or rip up the rulebook and give Jaguar a fresh start. The former was never an option if Jaguar was to survive.’
Jaguar’s Strategic Pivot: A Necessary Evolution
Despite producing high-quality vehicles, Jaguar struggled with commercial viability. Unable to sustain growth against German rivals, MD Rawdon Glover confirmed that moving beyond their traditional business model was essential for the company’s survival.
‘It wasn’t sustainable for us to continue as we were. A lot of brand management is small, little changes … it’s about tweaks here and there. This wasn’t one of those changes … It really needed to be a big … step.’
Jaguar is pivoting to the ultra-luxury market with a low-volume, high-margin model focused on exclusive design. To facilitate this shift, the brand has discontinued its entire existing lineup—including sedans, the F-Type, and the I-Pace—to make way for a new generation of distinctive electric vehicles like the Type 01 grand tourer.
The strategic pivot toward the Type 01 represents a significant gamble for Jaguar. By moving upmarket, the brand intends to target a more exclusive demographic; however, this unconventional design language carries the inherent risk of alienating its traditional customer base. Ultimately, the company maintains that its previous operational model was unsustainable, as it struggled to achieve the necessary scale and profitability within an intensely competitive market segment.
Jaguar’s comprehensive reinvention has drawn substantial attention, though reception has been mixed. The recent rebranding efforts and marketing campaigns ignited significant online criticism, while the polarizing aesthetic of the Type 00 concept and subsequent production models has sparked intense debate over their flamboyant design.
In essence, Jaguar is banking on a complete departure from its legacy to secure long-term commercial viability. While this bold strategy is not without its risks—particularly as the brand pivots toward a significantly higher price point for a more niche audience—the company remains committed to the belief that a radical transformation was the only viable path forward.
Jaguar’s radical pivot is a gamble to move upmarket after its previous strategy proved unsustainable. While the brand reports 50,000 expressions of interest for its new electric GT, the true test will be converting that interest into sales, as it targets a new customer base to replace its discontinued ICE lineup.
