Agreement On The Future Of The European Automotive Industry
France and Germany have reached an agreement on measures to preserve the future of the European automobile industry, with additional concessions from Paris regarding the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions until 2035 and a stricter definition of the “Made in Europe” principle, diplomatic sources announced today on the sidelines of the EU summit.
According to the agreement, France accepted additional easing of requirements related to CO2 car emissions until 2035, while Germany agreed to a stricter definition of the European industrial preference, Figaro reports.
According to the French newspaper, this would mean that goods produced in the EU member states, as well as in close partner countries such as Great Britain and Norway, would be given priority in procurement and production. The agreement represents a compromise between France’s advocacy for stronger protection of European production and Germany’s insistence on the competitiveness of the automotive industry, with slightly less ambitious environmental goals, adds Figaro.
