As part of an enforcement drive aimed at strengthening security and preventing criminals from concealing their identities, the Lagos State Police Command on Friday, October 2, 2026, impounded over 40 vehicles with covered, unauthorised or missing number plates.

The statewide crackdown, ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, follows the impoundment of over 50 vehicles on the first day of the enforcement exercise, which commenced on Monday, June 15, 2026.

The Lagos State Police Command disclosed this during a press briefing by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, on the achievements recorded by the Command in September 2026. The briefing also highlighted arrests of criminal suspects, including those allegedly involved in armed robbery.

“In continuation of the Command’s enforcement efforts against vehicles with covered number plates and unregistered vehicles, operatives carried out an early-morning enforcement operation today, during which over 41 vehicles were impounded for covered number plates, and non-vehicle registration. Further checks and enforcement actions are ongoing.”

The latest operation forms part of the Command’s wider efforts to ensure that vehicles operating without proper identification are brought into compliance with registration requirements.

The Lagos State Police Command said the enforcement efforts further demonstrate its determination to sustain public safety and ensure that Lagos remains hostile to criminal elements.

Within the period under review, the Command said it arrested 32 suspects and recovered several exhibits, including 43 impounded vehicles, two vehicle keys, ₦2.5 million in cash, and a bag containing various vehicle spare parts and tools.

The Police Command said further checks and enforcement actions remain ongoing as security operatives continue efforts to identify vehicles and individuals that may pose security risks across Lagos State.
