Mark Court, a former sign painter, continues to be the sole artist responsible for hand-painting the signature coachlines that adorn bespoke Rolls-Royce cars, a tradition he has upheld since the BMW Group-owned British marque opened its Goodwood plant in England in 2003.

Described by Rolls-Royce as its Master Coachliner, Mark’s job involves much more than painting straight lines, as customers also commission a variety of bespoke designs such as their initials, flowers, horse heads as well as various abstract shapes.

Mark rarely takes time off from the intricate work that reportedly earns him a six-figure salary at the automaker’s Goodwood factory, as he says doing so could cause him to lose his focus.

“Weekends are bad enough,” said the brand’s uniquely talented coachline painter, who spends hours hand-painting lines, flowers and other bespoke designs on Rolls-Royce cars. He explained that taking time off means he has to “refocus” when he returns to the intricate work.

Mark’s job is the final step in the manufacturing process, as the pinstripe paint adheres instantly to the car’s finished paintwork. This leaves virtually no room for error, meaning that any mistake in his work could require the entire car to be repainted.

“If you start worrying about who owns them or where it’s going, it’ll play with your mind. Then you’ll never do it. You just got to be able to learn to shut off and do what you need to do,” he said.

While Court has said he is still looking for an apprentice who could one day take over his role at Rolls-Royce, the brand said in a 2022 interview that he was leading a team that included two additional coachline painters as production volumes increased.
