Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transport, is one of the Africans nominated for the upcoming Blue Economy Awards, which will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, in March.
The Africa Blue Economy Forum honors distinguished African professionals and political leaders who have made verifiable contributions to the advancement of the blue (ocean) economy, according to the organizers.
Former Rivers State governor Amaechi was nominated for the Maritime Security category.
“This is in recognition of his role in the development and implementation of the deep blue security project, which has resulted in a significant reduction in piracy at sea and an overall improvement in maritime security across the Gulf of Guinea,” according to the statement.
Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Bio, was named Africa’s Blue Economy Champion for his political leadership, improved regulation through the rule of law, and promotion of blue economy investments.
According to Politico, Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister, was nominated for the Livelihood Improvement category for promoting programs and efforts to improve livelihood and social inclusion in Kenya’s coastal communities by leveraging blue economy opportunities in tourism, transportation, and aquaculture.
