2.1 Million Passengers Traveled Via Nigerian Rail In 2023, Generated N4.4 Billion – NBS

A total of 2,182,388 (-32.07 percent) passengers travelled via Nigerian rail system between January and December of 2023, according to the latest rail transportation data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) .

During the same period, NBS data shows that the volume of goods/cargos transported through rail stood at 317,244 tons, up by 102.04%, compared to 157,024 tons recorded in 2022.

In terms of revenue generation, N4,426,495,760 (-2.6%) was received from passengers, while N1.07b was collected from goods/cargos conveyed, which was up by 144.32%, compared to the N441,744,994 collected in 2022.

LASG Announces Plans To Add More Electric Buses To The BRT Fleet

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to add more eco-friendly Electric Buses to the current BRT fleet, nearly a year since LASG-Oando began the Electric Bus Pilot Program for passenger operations in the State.

The Lagos State Government through the Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL) had on May 1st 2023 began the Electric Bus Pilot Program for passenger operations in the State.

For the pilot scheme, two electric buses were brought in by Oando Clean energy Limited (OCEL). Each of these electric buses, marked with EV 01 and EV 02, has the ability to travel 280km at full charge, which far exceeds an average daily usage of 200km from existing diesel-powered BRTs.

Speeding Commercial Bus Crashes On 3rd Mainland Bridge, 2 Passengers Ejected Into Lagoon

Two passengers were reportedly ejected from a 20-seater commercial bus into the Lagos lagoon, following a road traffic accident on the newly renovated 11.8-kilometre 3rd Mainland Bridge in the early hours of Wednesday April 10th 2024.

According to a statement by the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), the bus was traveling at a high speed when it veered off the road, striking the bridge rails. The impact of the crash reportedly caused the two passengers to be ejected into the lagoon.

NEMA further revealed that the two passengers that was ejected from commercial bus into the lagoon, a man and a woman, are currently being searched for by the Marine Police.

It will be recalled that the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Keisha, had urged motorists to keep to the approved speed limit of 80-km per hour while announcing the unofficial re-opening of the bridge last Thursday.

FG To Charge Motorists Betw N1,500 – N5,000 At Toll Gate Along The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government (FG) has hinted that motorists plying the toll gates along the proposed 700-kilometer Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be charged between N1,500 – N5,000 depending on the type of vehicle.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, stated this during an interview on Channels Television programme, The Morning Brief, on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

During the program, Umahi said that the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway will gulp N4bn per kilometre and not N8bn per km, as reportedly claimed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“In 15 years, you make back the money,” he said while analyzing how the money will be made back, dismissing calls that the cost budgeted for the road project was high.
