Naija Car Lovers And ATCN Gives Back To The Society By Organising Young Adults Road Usage Seminar
The Young Adults Road Usage Seminar was organized by Naija Car lovers in collaboration with the Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria and the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Sector Command. It took place as scheduled and was a very interesting event.
Speakers at the event were drawn from the following agencies;
- Nigeria Police, Traffic Division (State Traffic Division).
- The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Sector Command
- Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)
- LASEMA Response Unit (LRU emergency unit)
- Lagos State Computerized Vehicle Inspection Services (LACVIS)
- ROCSOL Investments Services (a road traffic design and construction company)
In his welcome remarks, Mr Adrian Egonu pointed out that road crashes have killed lots of productive young adults and also destroyed millions of properties. He said that Nigerians especially the young adults need to adopt the right attitudinal changes to make our roads safer for all. Hence the need to gather all the traffic personnel to teach and reinforce the right knowledge to this most active road users of every population.
He equally called on the government to always factor the physically challenged into road construction to help them navigate safely and with less stress. He cited instances that road users have done things inimical to safe road usage and queried why most sane people do things insane people won’t do while on the roads either as pedestrians or as motorists and cyclists that ultimately result to these incidents and crashes.
In his speech, the Sector Commander FRSC, Corps Commander Hyginus Omeje, represented by Assistant Corps Commander Hauwa Olowookere, the Ag. Unit Commander Lagos Island Unit Command reminded all that road safety is a shared responsibility and every road user must be considered. Moreover, the FRSC capitalises on avenues as this to enlighten road users on the proper use of the road with a view to preventing Road Traffic Crashes all year round and particularly during the ember months.
They believe with these types of events, more people will be enlightened on the best practices to safely use the roads. She also informed the gathering that with their partnerships and public enlightenment efforts, road crashes have been on a steady decline in Nigeria.
In his speech, Mr Ishaku Bamaiyi, the President of the ATCN, reiterated the need for people to adopt practices that will ensure safety on the roads at all times. ATCN is an effective representative body of the Federation International De L’Automobile (FIA) in Nigeria for the mobility arm of its operations and vested with the responsibility of campaigning and promoting road safety as well as transport related matters etc.
Though the FIA is the governing body of motorsport worldwide. The club inspite of these challenges is working assiduously to ensure that the knowledge of road safely is not hindered so we will keep striving until road crashes and mortality is reduced to its minimum and through the FIA Action for Road Safety, will continue to effectively spread the knowledge of road safety all over our country until maximum result is achieved.
The participants were all impressed with the quality and enlightening presentations from the FRSC, Nigeria Police, the LASTMA, LRU, LACVIS and Rocsol. And a very robust and engaging question and answer session followed each segment of the program. Video presentations from the FIA were also played for the audience.
The following forms of road safety tailored entertainment were used to equally transmit the message:
- Dramas
- Poem
- Dance Choregraphy
- Songs (Performed by Abednego Noris, a blind student of Kings College Lagos who got a rousing ovation for his scintillating performance)
In the course of the event it was revealed that most of the crashes we have on our roads (especially low speed ones) are caused by people who do not have or fail to use the three things that are about the cheapest to buy in any car…..side or rearview mirrors, horns and trafficators. Most of these three items are as cheap as N1,500. Yet these are the most likely things people will overlook in their cars, and the absence of or failure to use these either of these three items will surely cause an accident.

There was also a live demonstration session by the personnel of the LRU on the resuscitation of a crash victim among other points they covered.
This event also gave participants both young and old the avenue to ask questions from all the speakers and got quality answers. And they pleaded that for subsequent editions of the program, we make the event longer so that more topics can be covered and more participants invited.
Other notable bodies that sent representatives to the event are the Guild of Professional Bloggers of Nigeria (GPBN), the Nigeria Automotive Journalists Association (NAJA) amongst others.
The event was a huge success.
