New Homes In UK Must Have Electric Vehicle Chargers Installed From 2022

Beginning in 2022, all new English homes must have electric vehicle chargers installed, according to a new law.

The new legislation are designed to make the transition to electric vehicles easier for consumers.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, announced new legislation requiring all new homes and buildings to incorporate EV chargers as part of the finished product.

“The power driving that shift won’t be government, and it won’t even be business,” Johnson remarked on November 21, 2021 at the Confederation of British Industry convention.

“The consumer will be the one to blame. Young people today will be the ones who demand better from us because they can witness the effects of climate change.”

Currently, England does not have enough Chargers.

All of this is significant because the United Kingdom has set a deadline of 2030 for new gasoline and diesel car sales to be replaced by electric vehicles.

At the same time, major automakers have committed to phase out internal combustion vehicles or dramatically increase electric car manufacturing between 2025 and 2030.

There are now just 25,000 charging sites in the UK, which is insufficient to cover even today’s number of electric vehicles.

According to the Competition and Markets Authority, which is part of the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the government will require ten times that amount to fulfill the 2030 EV target.
