Mercedes delivered the Pullman W109-based limousine from the 300 SEL series to the Vatican in the spring of 1967.
The Landaulet was more manageable than the 600 Pullman Landaulet Mercedes-Benz had gifted a year before.
The Pullman Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL landaulet Limousine was also used by Pope John Paul II.
Back in 1966, Mercedes-Benz handed over two Pullman W109-based limousines from the 300 SEL series to the Vatican in the spring of 1967. The Landaulet has a shorter wheelbase and was more manageable than the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet the pope had received a year earlier from the German autogiant.
Despite not being equipped with air conditioning systems, the custom-built Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL limousine was Pope Paul VI‘s favourite vehicle.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL limousine was used by the Vatican as official car for the Holy Father for many years before being returned to the Mercedes-Benz in 1985, where it was incorporated into the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection.
And indeed the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL limousine was heavily and fully armoured. Following attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square on 13 May 1981, the bodywork was furnished with bulletproof glazing.
