Porsche Says It Has No Plans For A 911 Plug-In-Hybrid Model
With the timely introduction of the electric Taycan model, which was later joined by the electric Macan and Cayenne models, and soon the new generation of the 718 Series, Porsche showed that it is among the companies that accept the idea of complete electrification, with which the sale of cars with internal combustion engines (primarily in European Union countries) will soon become a thing of the past.
At the same time, Porsche recently announced that the immortal 911, which has been in its eighth generation since 1963, will be remembered as the last Porsche model powered by an internal combustion engine, suggesting that Stuttgart has no intention of building its most famous model with only electric motors.
However, the elements of inevitable electrification arrived with the redesigned edition of the 992 Series (992.2), with which Porsche offered two “Elfers” (Turbo S and Carrera GTS) whose 6-cylinder boxer engines are assisted by a compact 400-volt hybrid system whose batteries (neither in terms of mass nor dimensions) have any negative impact on the car’s already legendary dynamics.
With the eventual introduction of a plug-in hybrid system, which is much more complex, the current 911 would no longer be a 911, because it would have to be larger and heavier, which, according to Frank Moser (who is responsible for the 911 and 718 models at Porsche), is absolutely unacceptable.
“We don’t want a different, larger, and heavier body, nor do we want to disrupt the current weight distribution across the axles, and current technology and battery mass rule out the possibility of a 911 with a plug-in hybrid system that would meet our criteria. We can only think about plug-in ‘Elfers’ if the batteries are one day smaller, more efficient, and significantly lighter,” said Moser.
