Tens Of Thousands Of German Auto Workers To Protest Against Job Losses
Tens of thousands of workers across Germany will take action on Monday to preserve industrial jobs and factories. Employees from Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, and major suppliers, among others, will participate in demonstrations at more than 280 locations throughout the country.
The German automotive industry has been struggling for a long time. The influential trade union IG Metall is urging companies to protect factories and jobs while simultaneously calling on the government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz to lower energy costs and shield domestic production from cheap imports.
“We are not going to stand idly by while a crucial industry is hollowed out step by step,” states Thorsten Gröger, the regional manager of IG Metall in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. “The employees did not cause the missteps of the past few years. They must not have to pay the price for that now.”
Volkswagen announced a substantial reduction in its profit forecast on Friday. This once again made clear how dire the situation is for the German automotive industry. Volkswagen is working on a major reorganization involving the loss of 100,000 jobs worldwide, and the threat of closure lies with several German factories.
There are also significant job losses at other companies in the German automotive sector. They are facing fierce competition from China, among other things. In addition, German factories are not as efficient.
There has also been a great deal of discontent in Germany recently regarding the policies of Chancellor Merz’s government. His party, the CDU, suffered major defeats last week in the state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Interest groups have been calling for more action from the federal government to help the economy for quite some time.
