Special Limited Edition Alpine A110 AGTZ Twin Tail From Zagato Breaks Cover
When you notice the Zagato name on a model, you are sure to see a marvel of design before your eyes. Once again, the famous Italian coachbuilder is no exception to the rule with its new creation: the Alpine A110 AGTZ Twin Tail. As its name suggests, Zagato was based on the Norman Berlinette. Its particularity lies mainly at the rear, with a modular stern.
Fans of the brand with the arrow A will have already noticed which model Zagato took inspiration from for the AGTZ Twin Tail, which is none other than the legendary Alpine A220. Her slender silhouette perfectly reflects the former Le Mans racer. At the front, we find the same kind of pulpy headlights with two lenses that go up to the level of the wings. The windshield pillars recede to form a single, curved window to the eye. The double-bossed roof, the signature of the Milanese coachbuilder, has been integrated into the Berlinetta.
Finally, air intakes on the rear sides have been added. But why the name Twin Tail? The answer once again lies in the car that served as Zagato’s muse. Indeed, the Alpine A220 existed in two body styles, one short and the other long. After failing to win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, engineers came up with the idea of truncating the rear of the A220 by 30 cm. New dimensions, will allow it to shine in several rally specials and hill climbs.
The particularity of the AGTZ Twin Tail therefore lies at the rear, where the interchangeable stern imitates the two versions of the Alpine A220 that existed. The owner thus has the choice between two possible configurations, adjustable as he sees fit. “The transformation is no longer destructive. Today, it can be repeated at the owner’s discretion, with a detachable tail, ready to adorn their garage as an exquisite automotive sculpture when they choose to travel in short-tail mode,” describes the bodybuilder.
A true work of art on wheels, the Alpine A110 AGTZ Twin Tail will only be produced in 19 units. If you are wondering about the price, it is set at €650,000, or 10 times the amount requested for a basic A110. Zagato plans to present its new exclusive creation to the general public on May 24 and 26, during the elegance competition of the Villa d’Este, on the banks of Lake Como. The first examples of the AGTZ Twin Tail must be delivered by October 2024.
