Toyota Motor Europe has made a historic decision that the new fully electric car of the Japanese manufacturer will be produced for the first time on European soil, in the Czech city of Kolín.

Serial production will be carried out at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) factory, which has been one of Toyota’s key strongholds in Europe for more than two decades, Mina agency reports.

In order to adapt production to the new electric model, Toyota will invest approximately 680 million euros in the expansion and modernization of the plant. The area of the factory will increase from 152,000 to 173,000 square meters, and new welding and painting workshops will be built, as well as a special battery assembly line.

The Czech government will support the project with an additional 64 million euros earmarked for the establishment of battery production.

Although Toyota is still keeping secret the details of the car that will be produced in Colin, it is assumed that it will be a compact crossover, one of the most sought-after segments of the European market. According to the information so far, the first serial copies are expected in 2028.

The plant in Kolin already produces the Aygo X and Yaris Hybrid, with an annual capacity of around 220,000 vehicles. The introduction of the electric model opens the possibility for increased production, new jobs, and strengthening cooperation with domestic suppliers.

Since its establishment in 2002, the factory has produced more than 4.5 million cars and today employs more than 3,200 workers, making it one of the largest employers in the region. In addition, Toyota’s first European mega logistics center has been operating in Kolin since last year, serving dealers in Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

With this move, Toyota further strengthens its position on the European market and clearly signals that electrification remains the main direction of its development in the years to come.
