Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda Thinks $170,000 Century SUV Will Attract Young People

Akio Toyoda thinks Century SUV will attract young people and those who previously felt the sedan wasn’t for them.

$170,000 Toyota Century SUV is designed to compete with models like Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga.

During a live broadcast, Toyota Chairman Akio recalled a time when Toyota’s executive parking area was “nothing but Centuries”.

But now, Alphards and Vellfires are common among Toyota’s higher-ups — a trend that inspired the creation of the Century SUV.

Toyota finally debuted its chauffeur-driven Century SUV last month in the hope to enter the ultra-luxury SUV segment bossed by the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 as well as models like Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga.

Though the Century comes with price of around $169,000 – which makes it cheaper than its rival but still a lot of money – yet Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda, thinks that the chauffeur-driven SUV will attract plenty of young buyers.

“This is the top premium, chauffeur-driven car not just within Toyota but in Japan. I think this model will also suit younger people and those who previously felt that a Century was not for them,” Toyoda said in a live broadcast during his visit to Toyota Times studio during.

During the broadcast, Akio also recalled a time when Toyota’s executive parking area was “nothing but Centuries”. But now, Alphards and Vellfires, and not chauffeur-driven cars, are common among Toyota’s higher-ups — a trend that likely inspired the creation of the Century SUV.

The first-class cabin of the Century SUV adopts a four-seat layout with individual rear seats. It is packed with retractable tray tables, smartphone docks, USB charging ports, two 11.6-inch screens, two smartphone-like touchscreen controls, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof.

Toyota Century SUV features a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with a 3.5L V6 engine producing a combined output power of 406hp. In addition to the base SUV, Century will be available in performance-focused GRMN trim.
