Toyota Has A New Partner After Leaving Subaru
Toyota is developing a new sports model in cooperation with a partner. But unlike earlier models, where the partner was Subaru, now this is no longer the case. Just to let you know, BMW is not in the game either, but it is about another Japanese manufacturer.
It is Mazda, and the fruit of the collaboration could be the new GR86 and MX-5.
The news came from Japan’s Best Car, so all of this should be taken with a grain of salt. The same source already claims that Toyota and Mazda will jointly develop successors on a shared platform. And that report doesn’t mention the Subaru BRZ at all. Considering the sales results, this may not be an accidental omission.
At first glance, the BRZ has always made less sense for Subaru than the FR-S and GR86 have for Scion/Toyota. After all, the whole idea was inspired by the iconic Toyota AE86. And when you look at Subaru’s traditional model range, rear-wheel-drive vehicles with a 2+2 configuration are simply not in its genes.
