Toyota Took Off The Buttons On The RAV4. It May Now Bring Them Back
Toyota minimized physical buttons in the sixth-gen RAV4 to favor touchscreen controls. However, the automaker is considering reinstating physical switches for certain functions if consumer feedback demands it.
The RAV4’s chief engineer, Yoshinori Futonagane, says the automaker may reinstate physical buttons in future models based on consumer feedback regarding the SUV’s screen-heavy interior.
“If necessary, yes, we will,” he told the publication.
During sixth-gen RAV4 development, Toyota’s effort to replace physical switches with touchscreen controls sparked internal debate over which functions should remain analogue.
Consumers are increasingly demanding a return to physical buttons in cars. Following backlash against touch-heavy interfaces, automakers like Volkswagen are reversing course, and Toyota is now reintroducing physical switches in global markets, including China, to satisfy user preferences for tactile controls.
Other manufacturers, including Kia and Audi, have committed to retaining physical controls. Conversely, Mazda has moved in the opposite direction with its new CX-5; the automaker has eliminated nearly all physical cabin buttons, favoring a reliance on voice commands and steering-wheel-mounted controls.
