Tyre Dealers Protest Chairman’s Being Missing From Onitsha Market

Mr Okey Atuenyi, the market chairman of New Tyre Dealers Traders Nkpor, near Onitsha market in Anambra state, has gone missing after being severely beaten by some youths from Amafor village Nkpor on Friday last week as he was leaving the market premises.
Angry traders brandished posters reading “New Tyre is a Peaceful Market,” “Stop Touting In The Market,” and “New Tyre Market Weep.” “Help Us, Anambra State Government” “Our Chairman Is Missing” “Emma Guilder, Give Us a Chance” barricade the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway to express their dissatisfaction.
The former chairman of the market, who addressed the traders, claimed that the alleged Amafor Youths had been extorting both traders and customers with various weapons over time, but that the market chairman had resisted such illegal collections following Governor Soludo’s ban on revenue collection by any body, which did not sit well with the touts, who allegedly invaded the market on Friday last week, beat up their chairman, and robbed him of an undisclosed sum of money.
They urged the Anambra state government to act, while also urging the traders to remain calm.
