A Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon recently turned heads after an incredible custom-made rims fitted to its wheels made the boxy German SUV looks as if was floating down the road.
Footage of the SUV cruising along the road shows that the tyres of the SUV are still firmly planted to the ground. What makes it appear as if it was floating above the ground is a visual illusion created by the custom rims, dubbed the floater rims.
Mercedes G-Wagon rides on custom floater rims
Floater rims are custom-made wheel rim attachments that doesn’t rotate with the wheels of a car as it moves. They use ball bearings, just like the spinner rims, but the rims are weighted to stop them from rotating with rims of larger diameters.
The floater rims appear stationary while the car moves — in this case, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon —, making the SUV appear as if it was floating over the ground.
British luxury marque Rolls-Royce uses the floater rims on its current lineup of vehicles to make the Rolls-Royce logo stay in the correct position when the car is moving or is parked.
New floater rims, called “Dub Floater”, costs more than a full set of tyres. As of February 2022, one brand floater rim cost $1,025 per wheel for a 20-by-8-1/2 inch rim while another brand cost $4,340 for a 27-by-9 inch rim.
