Jeep Says Toyota Can’t Match Its Off-Roading Abilities
US automaker Jeep says vehicles made by Japanese brand Toyota can’t match its off-roading abilities.
It says Toyota can be good elsewhere, but for rock-crawling, it’s going to be Jeep all the way.
Last year, Toyota and Lexus rolled out LC 300 and LX 600 – which are based on its TNGA-F platform.
This innovative body-on-frame layout has been globally revered as a capable chassis for off-roading.
Last year, Toyota and its luxury brand, Lexus, rolled out the latest-generation Toyota Land Cruiser 300-Series and its more luxurious version, the Lexus LX 600.
Both flagship SUVs are based on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, which has been globally revered as a capable chassis for off-roading.
Despite this innovative body-on-frame layout, Jeff Ellsworth, Head of Global Jeep Product Marketing at FCA Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, believes that Toyota will never match Jeep’s off-roading capabilities.

Speaking to Cars Guide at Australia’s launch of the 4xe model, Ellsworth argues that :
“I’m biased, but for sure [we’re better off-road]. There are different types of off-roading, and I have respect for Toyota so nothing against them, but when it comes to rock-crawling, Toyota can’t do what we can do. There’s going to be advantages to what Toyota can do elsewhere, but for rock-crawling, it’s going to be Jeep all the way.”
Jeep vehicles, including the Grand Cherokee, are known for their impressive water-fording and general off-roading prowess. Supporting systems, the brand’s Quadra-Trac and -Drive II tech, also makes covering obstacles a bit of an easier task.
Compared to Toyota’s range, Ellsworth says Jeep also positioned the Grand Cherokee to compete in a more premium segment :
“The position has always been as a more upscale vehicle, and each generation further and further enhances that. It’s a unique vehicle in that it’s able to attack the mainstream, while still extend itself to be able to attack the [more] premium brands.”
