McLaren F1 GTR expected to fetch $35M—a price that would make it the most expensive McLaren car ever.

F1 GTR Chassis 10R is one of only two F1 GTR “XP” Short-Tail prototypes, along with the 1995 24 Hour Le Mans winner.

Finished in McLaren’s scarlet and yellow 1990s pop art palette, making chassis 10R the most recognizable of all McLaren F1s.

RM Sotheby’s will offer a rare, centre-driving McLaren F1 GTR (Chassis 10R) at its 29th annual Monterey auction from August 12–15, 2026. Chassis 10R is expected to fetch over $35 million—a figure that would make it the most expensive McLaren car ever sold at auction.

Chassis 10R was driven during testing at the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren later converted it for road use and retained ownership until 1999, when they sold it to its sole private owner, rock and roll legend Nick Mason.

Until now, the well-maintained 10R had been part of Mason’s impeccable collection, which includes a Ferrari 250 GTO, Maserati 250F, Bugatti Type 35, Jaguar D-Type, Porsche 962, and a host of other magnificent examples.

Since entering the ownership of collector Nick Mason, the McLaren F1 GTR (Chassis 10R) has been maintained by both Paul and Dean Lanzante. The collector reportedly maintains an “open checkbook” policy for its care.

“Chassis 10R carries all of that history, all of that provenance, and the full weight of its remarkable pop cultural inheritance, transforming it into a true artifact of British heritage and a crown jewel for any collection,” RM Sotheby’s said in its listing.
