Hyundai Motor and Kia have launched a project to develop a cathode material for LFP batteries. In collaboration with Hyundai Steel and EcoPro BM, the market leader in cathode materials, this strategy aims to directly synthesize materials without creating precursors to produce cathode materials for LFP batteries. This solution would have an advantage since the cathode materials in LFP batteries are produced by adding lithium to precursor materials such as phosphate and iron sulfate. The direct synthesis process simultaneously adds phosphate, iron powder and lithium without creating a separate precursor. This eliminates one production step, reducing emissions of hazardous substances during production and production costs.

LFP batteries offer a longer cycle life than other types of lithium-ion batteries. They can withstand many charge and discharge cycles (often more than 2000 cycles) without significant degradation. In addition, lithium-iron-phosphate is thermally stable and less likely to overheat, fire or explode than other lithium-ion batteries. LFP batteries do not use cobalt or nickel, which are expensive and sometimes ethically problematic. This means they have lower production costs, which translates into savings for producers and consumers.
