Honda Like Toyota Is Working On A Manual Gearbox On EVs
Manual transmissions in electric cars are as necessary as umbrellas in the Sahara, but that is no reason not to please a section of the audience/customers. Honda has started testing a manual transmission in a test electric vehicle, writes The Drive.
The company’s engineers are currently testing a manual simulation transmission of the 0 Series electric model in the future.
During a recent press conference in Japan, a Honda engineer confirmed that it had developed a manual transmission with a clutch pedal for electric vehicles. Allegedly, a car with such a gearbox can replicate the sounds of the engines of Honda legends, such as the NSX.
Back in 2022, the company seemed resigned to the fact that manual transmission technology would have no place in its battery-powered models. But opinions change, and apparently, Honda has judged that there is a niche market for manual transmissions in electric vehicles.
An electric motor with a much wider RPM range can operate efficiently, so it only needs one gear, unlike internal combustion engines requiring multiple gears.
Toyota also had a manual transmission EV in mind and with Honda joining the fray, we are in for some serious competition.
