Pope Francis receives Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class-based “Popemobile” from German automaker.

Mercedes CEO personally handed over the unique electric G-Class-based “Popemobile” to Pope Francis today.

Pope has been using the renowned “Popemobiles” based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class for the past 45 years.

Mercedes-Benz has gifted Pope Francis the first-ever electric “Popemobile”, making the 87 year old pontiff the first head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State to use a fully electric Mercedes when making public appearances.

Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius and the team involved in the creation of the one-off car personally handed over the unique electric G-Class-based Popemobile to Pope Francis in the Vatican on Wednesday (today).

“With the new Popemobile, Pope Francis is the first pope to be travelling in a fully electric Mercedes-Benz when making public appearances,” Ola Källenius said at the handover ceremony.

“This is a special honour for our company, and I would like to thank His Holiness for his trust. With this Popemobile, we are also sending out a clear call for electromobility and decarbonisation”.

While Mercedes-Benz has been supplying vehicles to the Vatican for 94 years, the Pope has been using the renowned “Popemobiles” based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class for the past 45 years.

Unlike the base G580 with EQ Technology SUV, the new G-Class-based “Popemobile” painted in classic pearl white is packs several features specifically tailored to suit the pontiff’s needs during journeys at public appearances.

These includes an elevated swivelling single seat, which will make it possible for the Pope to move around flexibly to address an audience from different angles. Behind the single seat are two seats integrated on the left and right for additional passengers.

While the roof was removed at the B-pillar for an open-top experience, a separate hardtop offers protection for the occupants in case of rain or bad weather conditions.

In addition, the electric drivetrain of the new G580 with EQ technology was adapted to fully utilise the advantages of the four near-wheel motors for the special purpose of slow journeys at public appearances.
