Where Volkswagen introduced the electric ID7 in Europe with much fanfare, that will not happen in the United States the ID7 will not be marketed there at all. Procrastination leads to cancellation.
The run-up to the introduction of the Volkswagen ID7 was a long one in Europe. Back in 2019, Volkswagen previewed an electric model in the Passat segment with a concept car called ID Space Vizzion. In mid-2022, it launched a more production-ready concept car called the ID Aero, which gave a good idea of how Volkswagen would translate the ID concept into a Passat equivalent. By May 2023, the Volkswagen ID7 was finally here, and it wouldn’t be long before the ID7 would also be available as the ID7 Tourer. In China, ‘our’ Volkswagen ID7 is sold by FAW-VW as the ID7 Vizzion, while the joint venture SAIC-VW sells the ID7 in a different form as the ID7 S. In the United States, The electric Volkswagen is not yet for sale there. And that won’t happen anymore.
In the middle of last year, it became clear that Volkswagen would postpone the introduction of the ID7 in the United States and Canada until a later date. It was not stated when the cars would be on the market there. A considerable number of American Volkswagen dealers were not at all disappointed about this. They expected that an ID7 would be difficult to sell there. John Lucianio, among others – himself a Volkswagen dealer but also a member of the Volkswagen National Dealer Advisory Council—did not think it was likely that the ID7 could be marketed competitively. Another factor is that the market for sedans in the country has been declining for years. Volkswagen has now completely abandoned plans to market the ID7 in the United States and Canada.
That’s according to Automotive News. A Volkswagen spokesperson told Automotive News that the “continued challenging market for electric cars” is the basis for the decision. Volkswagen will introduce new EVs in North America in the future. Currently, the ID4 and the ID Buzz are the only electric models that VW sells in the United States and Canada.
