BRT Bus Fare Hike : Lagos Commuters Blast ‘Insensitive’ LAMATA Despite Fall In The Price Of Diesel

BRT Bus Fare Hike : Lagos commuters blast ‘Insensitive’ LAMATA despite fall in the price of diesel.
LAMATA cited increase in the cost of operations, need to keep the buses running as the reason for the increase in bus fares.
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), on Monday, 17th February 2025 (today) effected an eighteen (18%) percent increase in BRT bus fares.
In a statement on its social media platforms last Friday, LAMATA cited the increase in the cost of operations and the need to keep the buses running as the reason for the increase in transportation fares.
“Please be informed that there will be an 18 percent increase in the bus fare on all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) scheme,” a statement posted on LAMATA’s social media platforms reads.
“The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos.”
“The new fare will take effect from
Monday, 17th February 2025. We seek your understanding and cooperation.”
Following the news of impending increase in the price of BRT Bus fare, Lagos residents, who patronises the service, took to LAMATA’s social media pages to vent their grievances.
While some questions the move despite the fall in the price of diesel a day earlier, others urged LAMATA to convert their diesel-powered fleets to use the cheaper Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
