Report: VW Touareg To Return As An Electric SUV

The Germans have announced that the VW Touareg, their largest SUV, will switch to electric power. This follows the earlier introduction of electric versions of the Polo, Golf, and Tiguan.
The current Touareg, produced for nearly 25 years and sharing a platform with the Porsche Cayenne, will cease production next year. Its electric successor, under the ID branding, won’t arrive until 2029. The delay allows the Touareg to skip the existing PPE technology and become the first model on the new SSP architecture.
According to the German Automobilwoche, ID. The Touareg will thus take the title of the first VW model on the new platform, an honor that was originally supposed to go to the ID model. Roc. The launch of electric versions of the T-Roc and Golf has reportedly been pushed back to 2030 due to concerns over the cost and complexity of moving production of the classic Golf from Germany to Mexico to make room for the SSP models.
Models based on the SSP platform, including ID. The Touareg will use the zonal architecture and software developed by Rivian. This decision is based on strategy, but also on history. The first-generation Touareg was available in America but was withdrawn from sale in 2017. It has been effectively replaced by the locally produced Atlas, a larger SUV with a third row of seats that the Touareg has always lacked and that better suits the needs of American buyers. Volkswagen seems intent on keeping that division of roles well into the electric era.
