BMW Teases Next-Gen X5 Set To Be Launched Later This Year

As expected, the new generation of the BMW X5 G65 brings the full range of Neue Klasse innovations to the fifth edition of this luxury SUV. The new model will have five different types of powertrains, and Toyota has assisted in the Bavarians’ return to hydrogen.

BMW’s outgoing CEO, Oliver Zipse, recently announced during the company’s annual conference that the new generation X5 will be officially unveiled sometime this summer.

The fifth-generation X5, internally codenamed G65, will go down in history as the first BMW to offer five types of powertrains: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and hydrogen.

The hydrogen version, which could be called the iX5 60H xDrive, won’t be available for purchase until 2028. Due to uneven hydrogen refueling infrastructure, it likely won’t be available in all markets. BMW and Toyota are jointly developing a third-generation fuel cell powertrain.

BMW has not commented on rumors about a possible return of its “range extender” technology, first used in the i3 more than a decade ago. The technology, where the gasoline engine serves as a generator to charge the battery, is increasingly popular in China in response to concerns about range.

The X5 G65 will get six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, as well as V8 units for the M Performance and M versions. If the plug-in hybrid gets sixth-generation batteries with round cells, a significant increase in range can be expected compared to the current X5 xDrive50e.

After the premiere, the first versions should enter production in August. The first in line are the 40 xDrive and 40d xDrive, and by the end of the year, the 50e xDrive, M60e xDrive, and iX5 60 xDrive are also expected.

During 2027, the offer could be expanded to include the M60 xDrive, iX5 50 xDrive, and iX5 M70 xDrive models, while the X5 M with a V8 and electric drive will not arrive before 2028.
