Volkswagen Reported A 50% Model Range Decrease And Saw An 8.6% Decline In Sales
Volkswagen announced today that its sales in the second quarter of 2026 fell by 8.6 percent year-on-year to just under 2.1 million vehicles delivered, with a particularly pronounced decline in sales in China.
Deliveries of vehicles of the basic brand “Volkswagen” fell by 14 percent year-on-year to about one million vehicles, while “Audi” reports a drop of eight percent, and “Porsche” by as much as 18 percent.
The bright spots are Lamborghini and Skoda, which recorded sales growth, as well as Volkswagen’s truck unit, and the decline in China was partially offset by sales growth in Europe and the North and South American markets.
The Supervisory Board of Volkswagen has not yet made a final decision on the possible reduction in the number of employees and the closing of factories, but it has announced a new restructuring plan that aims to significantly reduce the complexity of the business.
At yesterday’s session, a package of 12 initiatives and a strategic plan until 2030 were presented, Stuttgarter Zeitung reports.
One of the key measures will be to reduce the range of models by up to 50 percent, while the number of possible combinations of equipment should be reduced by as much as 75 percent.
German media previously warned that Volkswagen could make a decision to close four factories in Germany, as well as cut up to 100,000 jobs worldwide.
The main problem of “Volkswagen” is weaker sales in key markets, especially in China and the United States of America.
In the first quarter of 2026, Volkswagen delivered a total of 2.05 million cars worldwide, four percent fewer than in the same quarter last year.
The company delivered 8.98 million vehicles last year, which means that annual deliveries fell to less than nine million for the first time.
