Honda Like Acura Pondering A “Bigger” Pilot SUV

Honda may join the “bigger is better” SUV trend with a potential three-row “Pilot XXL” model that would sit above the current Pilot.

Reports from industry insiders indicate that Honda is considering the development of a larger, three-row crossover positioned above the current Pilot. Tentatively referred to as the “Pilot XXL”, the vehicle could enter production as early as the first quarter of 2032.

The rumored model is expected to be approximately 8 inches (203 mm) longer than the existing Pilot, reaching an overall length of roughly 208.1 inches (5,286 mm). These dimensions would position the vehicle significantly ahead of competitors such as the Toyota Grand Highlander (201.4 inches), the Hyundai Palisade (199.2 inches), and the Kia Telluride (199.2 inches), while also surpassing the length of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L (204.9 inches), Chevrolet Traverse (204.5 inches), GMC Acadia (203.9 inches), and the Ford Explorer (198.7 inches).

The model will likely share components with the upcoming Acura XL and feature hybrid powertrains. While the Pilot remains a strong seller, it faces stiff competition, with 83,486 units sold through August—a 2.3% year-over-year decline compared to rivals like the Chevrolet Traverse.

To provide further context regarding these sales figures, the CR-V recorded 302,056 units sold through August, while the HR-V reached 96,164 units, placing the Pilot third in Honda’s crossover lineup.

Regarding pricing, the 2026 Pilot has a starting MSRP of $42,395, excluding a $1,595 destination fee, with the range-topping Black Edition priced at $55,195. While the Toyota Grand Highlander enters the market at a comparable base price, its premium Hybrid Max Platinum trim commands a starting price of $60,175.
