Amalgamated Megacity Transport Services Launches In Lagos With 50 CNG-Powered Buses

The Lagos State Government has taken another step towards cleaner and more efficient public transportation with the launch of new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses by Amalgamated Megacity Transport Services Limited.

The deployment marks the entry of Amalgamated Megacity into a growing group of transport operators investing in modern, high-capacity buses under the Lagos State Bus Industry Transition Programme (BITP).

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the investment as a sign of growing private-sector confidence in Lagos’ transportation reforms and its transition towards cleaner energy.

He explained that the transformation extends beyond buses to include rail, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Quality Bus Corridors, interchanges and waterways, with the aim of creating an integrated multimodal transport system.

According to the Commissioner, CNG is an important transition technology rather than the final destination, as Lagos plans to progressively move towards low-emission and eventually zero-emission mobility, including electric buses.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAMATA, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, said Amalgamated Megacity was engaged from the outset with the expectation that operators would invest in their own fleets and embrace cleaner technologies.

She disclosed that Amalgamated has committed to acquiring 50 CNG buses, with 15 already delivered and the remaining buses expected before the end of 2026. “This is the direction we expect the industry to go,” she said.

With Lagos requiring approximately 15,000 high-capacity buses, Akinajo stressed that government alone cannot meet the growing transport demand. The latest investment therefore highlights the increasing role of private operators in renewing Lagos’ public transport fleet and delivering cleaner mobility to commuters.
