Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it recorded 397 seizures of vehicles valued at ₦5.64 billion in 2024.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) stepped up its fight against smuggling activities in 2024, leading to 3,555 seizures with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦35.29 billion, a dramatic 100.92% increase versus the ₦17.56 billion from 2023.

Particularly noteworthy were the seizures of arms and ammunition, and the interception of illicit drugs and unauthorized pharmaceutical products, protecting public health from potentially dangerous counterfeit drugs.

The Customs Service’s anti-smuggling activities also led to the seizures of 397 vehicles valued at ₦5.64 billion between January and December, amid rising illegal importation of vehicles into Nigeria due to increase in high import duties and exchange rates.

“NCS adapted its strategies to these evolving security challenges resulting in the 3,555 seizures throughout the year, with a dramatic 100.92% increase in the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seizures from ₦17.56 billion in 2023 to ₦35.29 billion in 2024,” said in a statement.

“These seizures, with a Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) value of ₦28.46 billion and total duty of ₦6.83 billion, highlights the scale of attempted economic sabotage prevented by the Service.”

“The mounting sophistication of smuggling networks also necessitated a corresponding elevation in our enforcement capabilities, leading to enhanced collaboration with national and international partners and the deployment of advanced detection approaches.”

To further strengthen its enforcement capabilities, the Service is actively expanding its technological infrastructure through the integration of geo-spatial technology and other cutting-edge solutions.

“These technological advancements, coupled with capacity building and enhanced intelligence gathering mechanisms, will significantly boost our surveillance and enforcement operations.”
