BMW Intends To Keep Its Inline-6 And V8 Engines
BMW’s six-cylinder in-line engine and V8 are a strong part of the brand’s identity, a symbol of technological power, and the last oases of competence not captured by Chinese competitors. But today it is not easy to live with these powerful engines that emit lots and lots of CO2.
The head of BMW’s M division, Frank van Meel, announced that the V8 and 6-cylinder engines will remain but will have to be updated to meet the new Euro 7 regulations.
– We said that we don’t want to give up the internal combustion engine, so we are currently adapting our six-cylinder in-line engine and V8 for Euro 7 standards, he told Drive.
The V8 is offered in models like the M5, X5 M, X6 M, X7 M60i, and M8, while the six-cylinder engine is at the heart of iconic sports cars like the M240i and M3 CS.
On the M5 model, the power of the V8 engine has already dropped from 430 kW to 400 kW. BMW increased the power of the electric motor so the combined output of the plug-in hybrid system remained the same. Therefore, the solution for the survival of those engines will be detuning, but some power will still be returned to the performance of the hybrid system.
– As long as there is demand in the markets, we will continue to produce gasoline cars. Of course, if there is no demand and if everyone falls in love with electric cars, we will see.
