London Considering Large SUVs And Other Large Vehicles Should Pay Charges
SUV owners in London could soon face extra charges for driving around the capital. The city’s transport authority, Transport for London (TfL), is reportedly considering whether larger and heavier vehicles should pay special charges because of the damage and safety risks they pose. The idea is part of a broader rethinking of the role of large vehicles on congested city streets.
The debate has intensified as increasingly large vehicles are an increasingly common sight on London’s streets, which are already burdened by buses, cyclists, narrow roads, and cramped parking lots.
The argument is simple: the larger and heavier the vehicles, the more severe the consequences of a collision. One study showed that pedestrians and cyclists are 14 percent more likely to die in a collision with a larger vehicle.
Such vehicles can also reduce visibility to other drivers and pedestrians and take up more space on the road and in parking lots than the older models for which the city’s infrastructure was originally designed.
One of the options being explored is the introduction of a targeted fee that would apply only to the largest models and would be based on measurable factors such as mass or physical dimensions. This would save the smaller crossovers that many families use as standard cars from potential fines.
Another possibility is related to parking. Some local authorities already adjust parking prices based on emissions or vehicle category, so the scheme could include a charge based on size or weight.
TfL is linking this discussion to wider efforts to reduce the number of serious road accidents in London. This includes extending the speed limit zones to 30 km/h and reviewing the restrictions on some major roads, especially in the wider city area. The goal is to mitigate the consequences of collisions and reduce the number of fatalities and seriously injured persons.
