BMW M Is Producing EVs Out Of Want Rather Than Need

BMW’s upcoming electric M3, potentially badged iM3, will launch alongside the combustion model. BMW insists the EV is driven by performance goals rather than regulatory compliance.

Frank van Meel, head of BMW’s M division, has clarified that the development of the electric M3 is driven by a commitment to performance and customer choice rather than regulatory necessity. Emphasizing the brand’s dedication to both electric and combustion powertrains, van Meel stated, “We are not doing this because it has to be done, but because we are convinced you can build a fast and even better car this way.” He further noted that the company is prioritizing the timing of the release to ensure the final product meets their exacting standards for the M-series driving experience.

A New Platform

The Neue Klasse platform enables the quad-motor M3 to be built from the ground up, ensuring signature M driving dynamics through torque vectoring and advanced software. Frank van Meel emphasizes that this performance-focused shift gives customers the choice between electric and combustion power, rather than forcing a specific powertrain preference.

The upcoming electric M3, previewed by the M Concept Neue Klasse, features signature performance enhancements like flared arches, new bumpers, and a custom hood. Expected to produce between 700 and 1,000 hp via a quad-motor setup, the final production model is set for reveal next year.
