BMW’s Inline-6 Diesel Returns To The 5-Series

According to unofficial information circulating in the automotive industry, the facelift of BMW’s 5 Series G60 could bring one of the more interesting changes in the segment—the installation of the straight six-cylinder diesel engine B57 in the 520d model. A refreshed version of the five is expected in 2027.

BMWblog brings you this news that could be very appealing to fans of the brand. The B57 engine is not unknown in BMW’s range. It already starts the 540d model, in which it develops 286 hp and an impressive 700 Nm of torque, and in combination with the 48-volt mild hybrid system, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. What makes this engine special is not just the power but also the exceptional smoothness and quietness of operation, which is why many consider it one of the best diesel engines in the automotive industry today.

The 520d model has been the best seller in the range of five for years, especially in European markets where it dominates as a choice for official cars. The eventual installation of a six-cylinder engine, possibly in a detuned version adapted to this model, would be a clear signal that BMW remains faithful to diesel technology despite the pressure of electrification. Diesel still holds a significant market share in Germany, Great Britain, and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

For now, BMW has not officially confirmed any details related to the powertrains of the facelift, and the vehicle is not expected to hit showrooms before 2027. Until official confirmation arrives, information should be taken with a grain of salt.
