EU Car Sales Rebounds In The Month Of April After March Dip

Published

on

Sales of new cars in the EU (European Union) rose sharply in April, after the dip in March. According to the European Trade Association (ACEA), sales increased by almost 14 percent year over year to 913,995 new passenger cars.

ACEA says that this growth can partly be explained by the fact that April this year had two more sales days than April last year. That’s because Easter fell early this year. That calendar effect also caused sales to fall by more than 5 percent in March.

Furthermore, sales of fully electric cars in the EU increased by almost 15 percent last month to 108,552 vehicles. This gives them a market share in the EU of almost 12 percent, almost the same share as last April. The sales increase for hybrid cars (without a plug) was much greater, namely more than 33 percent. The market share of hybrid cars also increased considerably, from almost 25 percent to more than 29 percent.

All major European car markets – Germany, Spain, Italy and France – showed growth last month. In the Netherlands, sales shrank by almost 4 percent to 28,432 cars, according to ACEA. Over the first four months of this year, sales in the EU increased by 6.6 percent to almost 3.7 million cars.
