An unnamed buyer just paid a whopping $20,630,000 ($20.63 million) for the first Gordon Murray S1 LM commission at a RM Sotheby’s auction, making it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction – excluding charitable sales.
In a video shared by RM Sotheby’s, the S1 LM was seen been flown above the city beneath a helicopter during live bidding in Las Vegas on friday, creating one of the most dramatic auction scenes in recent memory.

A direct successor to the McLaren F1 LM designed by South African-born Professor Gordon Murray, the S1 LM (which denotes Special One Le Mans) was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the McLaren F1 GTR’s legendary 1995 Le Mans victory.
Only five examples of the S1 LMs will be created by the new ‘special vehicles’ division of the Gordon Murray Group (GMG). The buyer of this commission will collaborate directly with Gordon Murray and development driver Dario Franchitti to create their dream specification.

Powered by a custom 700-hp 4.3-litre Cosworth V12 engine, the GMA T.50-based S1 LM boasts carbon fiber surfaces shaped for efficiency and a gold wrapped Inconel exhaust work that recalls the original F1.
“The car is more than engineering. Murray created the S1 LM during his battle with cancer, describing it as a reminder of why he builds cars. That personal connection, combined with its lineage to the McLaren F1 LM, fuels its importance among collectors,” RM Sotheby’s said.
