General Motors CEO Mary Barra went on an official visit to Samsung Electronics headquarters in South Korea and met with three high-ranking officials: the head of Samsung Display, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and more importantly, Samsung SDI (the company’s battery arm).

Mary Barra discussed with Samsung SDI’s head Choi Yoon-ho the prospect of building an EV battery plant in Indiana, USA, and if everything goes according to plan, it should be operational by 2026, producing 30 GWh worth of batteries per year.

Additionally, GM may start sourcing other parts from Samsung, including cameras, sensors, and displays.

But that’s not all. Reportedly, GM’s CEO met with LG Energy Solutions as well, perhaps to discuss an alternative supplier. The two companies have a joint venture battery plant situated in Michigan, USA, which isn’t ready yet.
