Massive flood from Thursday’s heavy downpour sweeps hundreds of cars away in Germany, kills at least 70, many missing.
Flooding also affected parts of Netherlands as people were seen being evacuated in a tractor trailer in a flooded street.
At least 70 people have reportedly died and dozens more missing after a heavy downpour on Thursday triggered flash floods that swept away many vehicles and homes in Germany.
Yesterday’s apocalyptic flooding devastated several parts of western Germany, Belgium and Netherlands. Following the incident, the Germany Weather Service issued an extreme weather warning for three states this week.
More than 1,300 are still missing in Germany – the most affected country – after one of the worst floods in its history unleashed raging floods and landslides.
German media dubbed Thursday’s disaster a “flood of death” with at least 70 dead so far across the states of North-Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate.
The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, dubbed the weather “a catastrophe”, linking the events to climate change.
Angela Merkel told a press conference: “Heavy rainfall and floods are very inadequate words to describe this — it is therefore really a catastrophe.
“I fear that we will only see the full extent of the disaster in the coming days.”
Footage shared shows several damaged cars pile up on a street after flooding in parts of Germany, including Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Some vehicles were also seen submerged underneath the water while some roads collapsed due to ravaging flood.
Flooding also affected parts of Netherlands as people were seen being evacuated in a tractor trailer in a flooded street on July 15, 2021 in Valkenburg.
