Maserati Buyers Have No Interest In Electrified Vehicles

Following recent statements from Ferrari and Lamborghini on the topic of electric super sports cars, a similar reaction came from Maserati, saying that their customers are not at all interested in cars without an internal combustion engine.

The announcements were ambitious, but in the end, Maserati announced in March that they were giving up on the electric version of the MC20 super sports two-seater, which in the conventional version is powered by a centrally located three-liter biturbo V6 Nettuno engine (630 hp), because detailed analyses showed that potential Maserati buyers wanted a lightweight car powered by a powerful internal combustion engine.

Maserati’s head of engineering, Davide Danesin, confirmed the earlier decision to abandon the electric MC20 and said that it would be pointless to build a car that no one wants to buy.

“Our car buyers are simply not interested in electric versions, but at the same time they are very interested in versions powered by internal combustion engines, so we will turn in that direction, which is befitting a company like Maserati,” says Danesin.

Danesin also mentioned that in the digital age, there are more and more customers who prefer analogue and who would like to drive one of the Maserati models with a manual transmission, which Modena, where some new winds are blowing, will certainly take into consideration, at least in combination with limited series. As a reminder, the last Maserati models with manual transmissions were offered about twenty years ago.

Santo Ficilli, the head of Maserati and Alfa Romeo, previously revealed that the two companies will collaborate more and soon work on a joint project that should result in a super sports car powered by an improved version of the Nettuno engine. It seems that anything is possible after the sudden departure of Carlos Tavares, who, until recently, was at the helm of the struggling Stellantis group.
