Mercedes-Benz has signed an agreement with Samsung SDI to supply battery cells for the next generation of its electric vehicles.

These are cells based on nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC), and deliveries are related to models that will be built on the new MMA platform, expected from 2028.

This includes a wide range of compact and medium-sized SUVs, but also several coupe models whose names have not yet been revealed. Samsung SDI announced that its packages will bring high energy density and long service life, which meet the requirements of the premium segment.

Mercedes already uses NMC batteries in several models, but from different suppliers. The current CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4Matic are equipped with China’s CATL packs; the electric VLE carries a 115 kWh battery, and the recently introduced electric C-Class comes with a 94.5 kWh pack and a promised range of up to 760 kilometers.

NMC technology offers higher energy density and longer range, which premium brands usually put first. LFP batteries, on the other hand, last longer and can withstand more frequent charging up to 100 percent without significant degradation, but in range, they cannot match NMC solutions.
