Mercedes-Maybach SL Spy Photos Spotted, Set To Be Unveiled Later This Year
The current SL already does a lot of things differently than many of its predecessors. There’s another one in the pipeline that will open a new SL chapter: the Mercedes-Maybach SL.
The Mercedes-AMG SL is, as its name already gives away, a special one. It is the first SL developed by Mercedes-AMG and is much more focused on sporty driving behaviour than its predecessor. In fact, more so than most SLs ever built. In a way, it actually harks back to the original SL. After all, the famous 300 SL was a sports car par excellence at the time, and the 190 SL was essentially a distant ancestor of the SL 43, the first SL with a four-cylinder since then. The current SL also takes paths that are completely new to the model. For example, there will be a ‘Mythos’ derivative and a real Maybach. We see the latter here.
Where the Mythos will probably get a pretty distinctive nose, the Mercedes-Maybach SL is somewhat more recognizable as an SL. However, there are already differences to be spotted. For example, we see perforated camouflage stickers at the bottom of the front, which suggests that there are fine-meshed air vents there that we know from other Maybachs. In addition, expect a different grille with more bars than usual. Thinner bars, moreover. We are already getting a glimpse of that, just like the set of special Maybach wheels.
As befits a Maybach, the Mercedes-Maybach SL gets the largest engine we know. That means that the 4.0 biturbo V8 is hidden in it, probably in a 600-hp capacity. The V8 generates that power just like in the SL 63 all by itself without the support of electric motors; our spy photographer confirms that there was no charging port to be found on the Mercedes-Maybach SL. As a distinguishing element with the aforementioned SL 63, you can count on, among other things, somewhat more comfortable suspension and a lavishly decorated interior. We expect the unveiling later this year.
