Porsche has come out with a new innovative invention, putting your fingerprint on your 911. It’s not free as a fee has been placed on the procedure with a price tag a little less than ₦3m ($8100) before VAT. It’s a painting method created in-house by Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur division’s portfolio. It allows high-quality elements, such as individual fingerprints, to be printed onto the body parts of the sports car.
The direct printing technology was developed in the paint shop of Porsche’s Zuffenhausen, Germany, training center. This allows for more detailed designs that aren’t possible with conventional painting. European customers who want their fingerprint on the hood of their 911 can go through Porsche Centers.
Porsche are also offering these services to test their capabilities in customer-specific designs. Customers opting for this personalization method will be in direct touch with official consultants, who will explain every step, from the submission of the fingerprint to the completion of the project. They will supervise the entire process and Porsche claims that the biometric data will be processed. This will make it so that it cannot be used for unauthorized purposes.
The company will remove the hood then the owner’s biometric will be applied onto the body panel by a robot. A clear coat will be added afterward and then the hood will be polished to a high-gloss finish. After that, the hood goes back on the car and it looks something along the lines of this 911 depicted here.
The operating principle is similar to that of an inkjet printer: using a print head. The paint is applied to three-dimensional components automatically and without overspray. “The ability to control the nozzles individually permits the targeted application of every paint droplet.” Says Christian Will, Vice President Production Development at Porsche AG. “The complexity is due to the necessity of harmonizing three technologies: robot technology (control, sensors, programming), application technology (print head, graphic handling) and paint technology (application process, paint).”
