The Germans Are Not Involved In The Development Of The New Toyota Supra

Toyota is ending its collaboration with the Bavarians for the next-generation GR Supra, which is expected in 2027. Instead of BMW’s engines and platform, the sixth-generation Supra will utilise Toyota’s 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine, producing around 400 hp.

The current A90 Supra, launched in 2019, shares many components with the BMW Z4, and both vehicles are manufactured at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.

The decision to collaborate allowed Toyota to revive the Supra name without building an entirely new platform, while allowing BMW to produce a more cost-effective, low-volume roadster model.

Toyota Gazoo Racing has decided to develop its version of the Supra. The new generation will use Toyota’s rear-wheel drive platform and replace BMW’s B58 inline-six with a new hybrid 2.0-litre unit. It’s a lighter design that’s better suited to future emissions standards.
