This incredibly rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing just sold for a record $6.8 million at auction.
The Mercedes, one of just 24 aluminum Gullwings built in ‘55, is one of the rarest production cars of all time.
This particular Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was delivered new in Casablanca, Morocco.
It is the only alloy-bodied Mercedes-Benz W198 to ever be delivered new to the African continent.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was capable of reaching a top speed of up to 263 km/h (163 mph).
It was both a sports car racing champion and the fastest production car of its time.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Grand tourer was voted the “sports car of the century” in 1999.
A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gullwing has set a new record for the iconic model after being for $6.8 Million at the RM Sotheby’s Scottsdale auction in Phoenix, Arizona.
This incredibly rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was able to fetch more than a ‘55 Alloy Gullwing that sold for $4.2 million at Gooding & Company’s Scottsdale auction back in 2012.
The Mercedes-Benz, chassis 5500332, nicknamed the “Weckerlé Alloy,” is one of just 24 aluminum Gullwings built in 1955 and is it considered as one of the rarest production cars of all time.
This particular record-setting example was delivered new in Casablanca, Morocco. It is the only alloy-bodied W198 to ever be delivered new to the African continent.
The SL in the models moniker is the short form for “super-light” in German; a designation referring to the car’s racing-bred light tubular frame construction.
300 SL is capable of reaching a top speed of up to 263 km/h (163 mph). It was both a sports car racing champion and the fastest production car of its time.
