Toyota GR Corolla May Get A New Engine In The Future

The Toyota GR Corolla isn’t going anywhere, but its three-cylinder engine may be retiring. With a new turbocharged engine on the horizon, the sporty Corolla could take another step forward.

The Toyota GR Corolla has quickly gained the favor of fans of the brand but also all driving enthusiasts. Whether it is an automatic or manual version, this sports compact is incredibly fun to drive. A large part of its charm comes from the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine that develops an impressive 300 hp. Unfortunately, it seems that this three-cylinder engine could soon become history.

With the unveiling of the new Corolla concept in Japan, Toyota also revealed a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is said to produce around 400 horsepower. The new engine is reportedly simpler in design than the current three-cylinder that powers the GR Corolla, which could mean Toyota is preparing to replace it.

Toyota’s Chief Technical Officer, Hiroki Nakajima hinted that this new engine could be fitted to future sports models. While he didn’t directly confirm whether it will be used in the next-generation GR Corolla, everything points to that.

Even if Toyota decides to upgrade the GR Corolla with a more powerful four-cylinder engine, classic engine fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Nakajima reiterated that Toyota “needs to produce engines until the very end,” confirming that the company has no plans to completely abandon gasoline powertrains.

As special as the current three-cylinder is, moving to a simpler and more powerful four-cylinder engine makes sense in the long run. GR Corolla chief engineer Naoyuki Sakamoto admitted that the team “knows the limits” of the existing engine and that a lot of engineering was needed to achieve the power needed for the automatic version.

If the new generation GR Corolla does indeed get a 400 hp engine, it will surpass competitors like the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R.
