VW T-Roc Convertible: The Convertible SUV Returns ??

Published

on

The convertible is technically a dying breed of vehicles with most brands shovelling them off their lineup as years go by. But some brands don’t want to give up on it just yet especially in the SUV guise. Now enter the VW T-Roc convertible, the first of its kind in the VW SUV lineup.

Exterior

Based on the VW Group’s ubiquitous MQB platform, it’s best to think of the T-Roc as a beefier Golf with more ground clearance but without any real off-road capability. In fact, the T-Roc Convertible essentially replaces the Golf convertible for our modern, SUV-obsessed times. In case you don’t know, the T-Roc is also available in a standard 5 door SUV.  As the first crossover convertible in the compact class, it unites the robustness and strengths of an SUV with the joyful driving experience of an open-top car. The fully electric roof — only offered in black — opens in nine seconds by pressing a switch on the centre console or using the key fob remotely, and works at speeds up to 19 miles per hour.

Interior

The interior design of the 2 + 2-seater Volkswagen T-Roc Convertible harmonises perfectly with the package. The geometries and surfaces appear clean and calm. Certain details conveying the robust SUV look – the interior echoes the contemporary styling of the exterior. The large-area inlays are available in four matt colours for both equipment lines. These are Silver Silk, Shadow Steel, Turmeric Yellow and Ravenna Blue. For the seat covers, there are five colours available, including black, grey and brown. The Composition radio with 16.5-centimetre diagonal comes as standard in the Volkswagen T-Roc Convertible. It has two USB ports and a Bluetooth interface. The optional App-Connect function puts MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the display, thereby integrating passengers’ smartphones in their native surroundings.

The luggage compartment has a capacity of 280 litres – regardless of whether the soft top is open or closed. The versatility of the T-Roc Convertible is highlighted by the folding rear seat backrests.

Engine And Transmission

The VW T-Roc will be available in 2 engine variant. The engines include a 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine that outputs 113hp. A 1.5-litre engine is a 4 cylinder that outputs 148hp mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 1.0 litre is available only in a 6-speed manual gearbox.

VW hopes the T-Roc Convertible will be a success in comparison with other convertible SUVs that failed. The other convertible SUVs like the Range Rover Evoque and the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet failed woefully to the extent they were discontinued. Only sales will determine its success or failure as its a big risk VW are taking.
