10 Traffic Offences That Can Send You To Jail In Lagos State

Traffic offences might appear trivial (a misdemeanor), but some of them can actually land you in prison.

In Lagos State, some traffic offences come with jail sentences as consequences.  In this article, we highlighted them to create some awareness about them.

Remember, the state doesn’t accept ignorance of these laws as an excuse. Like the old saying goes; to be forewarned is to be forearmed. So, obey all traffic laws and drive responsibly.





Note: Some of these offences comes with an option of fines.

  1. Exceeding prescribed speed limit:        One-year in prison.
  2. Assault on traffic officer (physical):     Three years in prison
  3. Driving in a direction prohibited by the road traffic law/ Neglect of traffic directions: One year in prison (1st offender); three years in prison (2nd and subsequent offender)
  4. Bullion van driving in a direction prohibited by the road traffic law:  Three years in prison
  5. Abandoned vehicle on highway:  Six months in prison
  6. Use of BRT Lite corridor: Three years in prison
  7. Willful Obstruction on highway: One year in prison
  8. Riding motor-cycle without crash helmet for rider: six months in prison
  9. Conveying more than one passenger at any given time (motor-cycle): Six months in prison.
  10. Motor-cycle operator carrying ( Pregnant woman; ii. Adult with baby; iii. Child below the age of twelve years): Three years in prison.
