Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won his first-ever World Championship title after a thrilling final race in Abu Dhabi.

Safety car chaos on the last lap allowed Max Verstappen to overtake Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton had led for most of the race, and also looked on course to take home a record-breaking eight title. 

The Dutchman later fought back to overtake Hamilton to win his first-ever World Championship title.





Dutchman Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing-Honda on Sunday won his first-ever Formula 1 World Championship after a thrilling final race at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen snatched the World championship off Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of a 22-race season after a late safety car chaos allowed the Dutchman to overtake the Mercedes star on newer tyres.





At the age of 24 years and 66 days, Verstappen, the youngest to ever start a Grand Prix at 17 years and 166 days, became one of the youngest-ever driver to win the championship. With his victory, he became the first Dutch driver to win the Formula One World Championship.

Mercedes star, Hamilton, had led for most of the race and also looked on course to take home a record-breaking eight title, before Verstappen fought back to overtake him to become the 34th Formula One World Drivers’ Champion.

“It’s been an incredible season, not only this race, but incredible battles,” Verstappen said.

“It’s been tense, the competition. Almost every race we’ve been pushing each other to the limit. The ultimate goal was the world championship. But now that happened. It’s just insane.”

Hamilton had led Verstappen by 11 seconds with six laps remaining in their winner-takes-all finale, before Verstappen pulled two seconds clear to win the race and secure the championship by 8 points.
